A


Agriculture - We are providing vegetables and fruit for own consumption. 
- We do commercial tomato production under drip irrigation. 
- We are involved in an Emergent Farmer project whereby we will assist 62 local farmers from 3 associations with technical assistance in maize, beans and sesame production.Depending on it’s success this project has the potential to expand to a large number of subsistence farmers.
-We have a nucleus cattle breeding herd - See cattle.
-Students can follow theoretical and practical agricultural courses.

Absenteeism- Student who miss 25% of classes will not be permitted to write exams.
-Re-writing of exams or extra work will not be given to students who are absent.
-For practical reasons and planned overseas holidays pupils may be absent without a problem.


Achievements
-So far 9 students have written external exams at O- and A-Level. Our pass-rate is 83%.
-50 students have written ICDL & IT exams through City & Guilds. Our pass-rate is 82%
-One of our students has gain university entrance in Finland to pursue a Travel and Tourism degree in a course started at Centro Educacional Njerenje.
-Two students have passed O-levels at Centro Educacional Njerenje and doing A-level courses in England.
-Based on a certificate of competence gained at Centro Educacional Njerenje - Pedro Francisco has won 2 tenders for electrical and plumbing installation contracts.  He has bought a vehicle and now employs 3 people to work for him.

Assessments - see assessment
Objective assessments of every aspect of the students school function are done 3 times per year.
A detailed report is sent to parents and analysis and discussion with teachers is compulsory.

B

Bed-time.

Junior lights out at 8.00pm.
Senior lights out at 9.15pm.
A-level students can plan their own study times - no restrictions.

Bicycles

Boarders are permitted to bring their own bicycles.
The school is not responsible for breakages, theft or injury.

Breakages
- must be reported to staff.
- students are responsible for repair, replacement or payment of costs.

Books -  writing books and text books are supplied by the school.

Boyfriends - see Code of Conduct.

Bullying - must be reported to staff immediately and without fear.
- Our Code of Conduct has engendered mutual respect amongst students senior and junior and bullying has not been a problem.

C

Cell-phones- have to be handed in to be used on Wednesday afternoons and week-ends only or at anytime in case of emergency.

Career Guidance - starts with the students aptitude and discussion with parents to design a career directed portfolio - starting in Grade 9.

Cattle- a nucleus breeding herd contributes to genetic improvement of local cattle by sale of bulls.
-Animal husbandry is part of our agriculture course and we work with the Vet Dept and ISPM (polytechnic) in student training.








Computers- All students, - primary and secondary - receive computer training.

Confidence- integral part of our teaching strategy is to cultivate confidence, problem solving and independence.

Duty- A member of staff is on duty all the times.
Dress-
-For teaching and all school functions full school uniform must be worn.
-After sport / shower at 5.00pm students may wear civilian cloths of their choice provided they meet certain criteria e.g. no visible boobs or midriffs.
-Outside school - in town - students must be in full school uniform OR in civvies.
-Partial display of uniform will not be tolerated and we ask for parental co-operation.
Drinks- Cold water and cold juice , coffee or tea is available to students at all times.

We encourage honesty, tolerance and mutual respect between pupil and staff, boy and girl and senior and junior. No bullying.
If we can get our students to pursue worthwhile values then discipline is easy.

Exeats- Students are permitted to go out for weekends - but strictly with parents consent.
-We require a visitors list from all parents.
-Students have to be SIGNED OUT.

Ecology Courses- Taking students OUT of the classroom within the context of curriculum is encouraged for all classes.
-Environmental awareness, locally and globally - is an important part of our curriculum and teaching strategy.

Exams - Internal and external exams are written in June and November.
-A report to parents will reflect the students mark and a class average. This is to enable parents to assess their child’ achievements objectively.

EXTERNAL EXAMS
1. Students will only be entered if their achievements indicate the required standard.
2. Fees must be paid in advance. All parents will be notified in writing and well in advance and are additional to school fees.
NOTE: Exam fees do not benefit CEN and are paid directly to Cambridge or City and Guilds.

1. All parents to sign Agreement of Payment Form.
2. All fees are paid in advance at the beginning of each term.
3. A deposit of 500 USD per family is required with your application.

Important

1.Refunding of deposits or fees will only be made if 3 month’s (1 term’s) notification of student withdrawal is received.
2.In the case of expulsion for whatever reason - no fees or deposits will be refunded.

Food- We have a 3-week rotating menu.
-Students are encouraged to bring recipes.
-Menu composition provides a balanced diet.
-Important Students can say how much they want - but once on the plate - everything must be eaten. No waste of food.
-We cater for allergies, religious convictions and vegetarians.
-We make sure that no student goes hungry - we provide enough food.
-We produce 90% of our fresh vegetable requirements.


Foot-wear
-White sports shoes with short white socks.
-In hot weather - black rafters are permissible.

G

General Knowledge - Global awareness is essential and is taught from Grade 1 throughout.
IMPORTANT - all external exams require extra-curricular knowledge and awareness.
- Students must - read books
- watch National Geographic
- read News week and Time magazine
- read economic and political news.
- read newspapers
- listen to the news.
- research additional information on internet.
- All parents must cultivate interest and stimulation of a broad perspective in assisting with the education of their children.

Girlfriends - See Code of Conduct.

Garden- We try to be self-sufficient in vegetables and fruits.
- Students are welcome to visit the garden to eat ‘a fresh carrot or a strawberry’
- but no abuse will tolerated.

H

Honesty- We teach honesty - no lies, no cheating.
- Students will do some tests unsupervised.
Hair - See Code of Conduct.

Hats- a black cap is required.

Holidays- See YEAR PROGRAM.

Hygiene - All students - especially the juniors - to be trained by parents to follow a correct hygiene regime.

Health- We have a fully qualified resident nursing sister.
- Doctor Abrantes is on call for CEN.
- On advice of Dr. Abrantes students are sent for malaria or other testing to the clinic or the hospital.
-All medical expenses accrue to the parent.
-All medication must be handed in and administered by the Sister.
-Parents are notified and consulted immediately.
-All students to bring malaria medication of parents choice.
-All students to bring a mosquito net.

NOTE:
1. No Tuck.
2. All valuables including money - to be handed in.
3. C.E.N. management is not responsible for loss or damage to valuables not handed in or unauthorized.
4. Damages or breakages are to be paid for by the responsible student.
5. A member of staff will be on duty at all times.
6. T.V. programs to be approved by member of staff on duty.

I

Internet - We have satellite internet connection.
- We access and research curriculum material on the Cambridge and other web-sites
- We encourage all secondary school students to acquire their own lap-tops.
- All school computers allow only approved access for students.
- Parents are asked to implement their own control measures on what their children can access on the internet.
- Accessing pornography - strictly forbidden - punishable by expulsion.

Indemnity It is important for parents to sign the indemnity declaration so that the headmaster can
act in ‘loco parentis’ in case of emergency. See Declaration

Independence An important aspect of education at CEN is to coach independence so that students
learn self-discipline, time-management - when to study and when to play - but also to cope with the problems they face.

J

Juniors
If young people are put into boarding they must be - be ready for it -
- tie their own shoes.
- make their own beds.
- be hygiene and toilet trained.
We can not take on the role of “mother” except in the group context.

K
Knives - or other dangerous instruments - strictly forbidden.
Kitchen- catering done by supervisor and 3 cooks.

-Day scholars join the boarders for a substantial lunch.

-Breakfast at 7.00am.

-Lunch at 12.45pm.

-Dinner at 6.00pm.

-Boarders can have cool-drink /tea /coffee and a sandwich at any time in the afternoon until 5.00pm. (They make it themselves) -See FOOD.

L
Language- Medium of instruction is English.
- We have many students who CAN NOT speak English.
- It takes about 2 terms (9 months) for students reach a level of proficiency.
- We make provision for these students in our teaching strategies and at secondary level a teacher is assigned to give them special assistance.
- It is difficult for 2nd language students but with patience and time the difficulty can be overcome.

Leaving the school premises - At all times students must request permission to leave the school grounds or when going for long walks.
- When going for walks students must be in a group - never alone.

M
Malaria- is our biggest health problem.
-mosquito nets are compulsory.
-we spray students twice in the afternoon with DETTOL and water and we burn coils at supper time.
-Our buildings are sprayed every holiday.

Medication- See HEALTH.

Modulisation- our teaching strategy is to modulise the curriculum so that quick students get ahead and slow students can have more more time to grasp basic concepts. This takes a great deal off pressure off students and parents.

Nets- See Health and Malaria.

O

Out-of-bonds- No student may leave the school premise without reporting to the teacher on duty.
- Staff gardens and houses or rooms are private and can only be visited by invitation.

Observations- Every week teachers and prefects have to submit observations on academic, sporting and social activities of students.
-These are discussed at weekly staff-meetings.
-This provides teacher and the headmaster a “finger on the pulse” information about every student in every school situation.
-The teaching team can share information devise assistance strategies and be prepared to answer parents queries at any time.
-This is a very worthwhile strategy.

P
Probation- Students and staff all serve probation periods to asses compatibility to C.E.N. system.

Pornography- Strictly forbidden - punishable by expulsion.

Public Holidays - See the year program form YP1.
-Generally if public holidays fall on a Friday or Monday we have long week-ends.
- If the public holiday falls mid-week we carry on as normal.

Prefects- leadership identification is done by teaching staff.
- to assist with the day-to-day admin of students under guidance from staff is the main responsibility.
- these are the student ambassadors of the school.
- responsibility enhances perspective and all-round development.

Portfolios- See Curriculum.
- These are devised after consultation with parent and student to plan a study road-map aimed at a career.
- Portfolios provide students with study time or free periods during normal school time. It is essential that students have time-management and self-discipline so that these periods are used constructively.
- Portfolios are revised whenever necessary.

Pocket Money - all money to be handed in.
-C.E.N. is not responsible for any loss or theft of money kept by students.
-pocket money may be drawn at any time-as and when-needed.

Parent Role- we have an open-door-policy.
- we want the parent-pupil-teacher triangle to function. Our team must provide the best possible opportunities to the student.
- Parents are welcome to discuss student progress and problems.
- We can only correct problems if we know about them.
- We want parents to be positive partners -not negative antagonists.
- Parents must make sure their children are fully aware of the Centro Educacional Njerenje code of conduct and code of ethics.

Q

Quiet Time
- Students must fully understand that rest time at mid-day and evenings after supper are “quiet time” and will be enforced by appropriate punishment.

R

Remedial
- Students are free to consult teachers during study times or any other possible times.
- Teachers will give special attention and extra work to students who may require assistance.

Registration- C.E.N. is registered with Mozambican Ministry of Education

Religion- Will not be taught at C.E.N.
-This is a private matter between parent and child.
-Students are free to worship as they wish as long as they do not infringe on the rights of others.

Shopping- Boarders are taken to town on Friday afternoon or Saturday mornings.

Termination of Attendance
- 3 months (1 term’s) notice is to be given if a student is to be withdrawn.
- Failure to do so will forfeit all fee-refunds and deposit money.

- if important education programs or sporting events are on, special viewing concessions are made.

Theft - C.E.N. is not responsible or accountable for property that is stolen.
